What to Expect During Generator Installation

Most homeowners who call us about a generator have already looked at a few units online and picked a number in their head. That number is usually the least useful part of the conversation. What actually determines the job is what's already on your property: your electrical panel, your gas line, your slab or crawlspace, and how much room you have between your house and your property line. We start there, not with a catalog.

The load assessment comes first

Before we talk generator size, we look at your panel. How many circuits do you have, what's on each one, and what's the total amperage your service is rated for. A lot of homes in Gonzales and Prairieville built in the last fifteen years run a 200-amp panel, which gives you room to work with. Older homes in Baton Rouge, especially anything from the 1960s and 70s, sometimes still have 100-amp service, and that changes what a generator can realistically carry. We measure the actual draw of your AC, your water heater if it's electric, your refrigerator, and anything else that runs continuously, rather than going off the nameplate rating alone, because nameplate ratings assume worst case and overstate what a circuit actually pulls in daily use.

Whole-house or essential circuits

This is the decision that drives everything after it. A whole-house setup runs your entire panel, including both AC units if you have a two-zone system, through an automatic transfer switch rated for your full service amperage. An essential-circuits setup uses a smaller transfer switch or a load-management panel that runs a defined subset: one AC zone, the refrigerator, some lighting circuits, maybe a well pump or sump pump if you have one. The trade-off is straightforward. Whole-house costs more upfront in generator size and switch gear, but you never have to think about what's running. Essential circuits costs less and needs a smaller generator, but you have to actually decide in advance what stays on, which is a harder conversation than it sounds when it's 95 degrees outside and the AC is one of the things you're choosing between.

The transfer switch is the part that actually matters

An automatic transfer switch is what makes a standby generator different from a portable one. It sits between your utility meter and your panel, senses when utility power drops, disconnects you from the grid, starts the generator, and switches your house over, usually inside 10 to 20 seconds. It also does the reverse when utility power comes back, which prevents you from backfeeding power onto a line a utility crew might be working on. That backfeed protection is not optional and it's not a formality. It's the reason transfer switches are inspected and permitted rather than treated as an accessory. We size the switch to your service amperage, not to the generator, because the switch has to handle everything the panel could theoretically pull.

The pad, the clearances, and the gas hookup

The generator itself sits on a composite or concrete pad, set back from the house per the manufacturer's clearance requirements around windows, doors, and fresh air intakes. In south Louisiana that pad also has to account for our water table. Ground that stays saturated for weeks after a heavy rain needs proper compaction and drainage under the pad, or you'll be dealing with a unit that's shifted or settling within a couple of years. On the fuel side, most of what we install runs on natural gas where a line is already available, which in Geismar, Gonzales, and parts of Prairieville is common in newer subdivisions. Where there's no natural gas service, propane is the fallback, and that means sizing a tank alongside the generator, which is its own conversation about how long you want to run unattended.

Permitting and the commissioning test

A standby generator install gets permitted and inspected like any other electrical work tied to your service panel, because it is exactly that. We pull the permit, the work gets inspected, and the last step before we hand you the keys is a commissioning test: we simulate a utility outage, watch the transfer switch cycle the generator on, confirm it's carrying the load you sized for without tripping, and let it run long enough to check voltage and frequency stay steady. We also set up the exercise schedule most units run automatically, a short self-test every week or two, so the generator isn't sitting untouched for months and failing exactly when you need it during hurricane season.

Why the timeline looks different here

Hurricane season in Ascension Parish runs June through November, and it's the reason most people finally call about a generator, usually right after a multi-day outage rather than before one. That timing works against you a little, because permitting and equipment lead times don't compress just because a storm already came through.
